Your Body’s Own Growth Factors, Put to Work for Your Skin and Hair

Your skin and hair are constantly repairing themselves. Every cut, scrape and sunburn triggers a cascade of growth factors and healing signals that rebuild tissue from the inside out. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy takes that same biology and concentrates it, delivering a powerful dose of your own healing potential directly where your skin or scalp needs it most.

At Choosi Skin Face & Laser Spa in Cincinnati, OH, Dr. Tiffany Hall uses PRP for skin rejuvenation, under-eye dark circles and hair restoration. It also works well as an add-on to amplify the results of treatments like RF microneedling and laser skin resurfacing.

What Is Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP)?

PRP is a concentrated serum derived from your own blood. A small sample is drawn, then spun in a centrifuge to separate the platelet-rich layer from red blood cells and other components. The result is a golden-colored plasma containing four to seven times the normal concentration of platelets, packed with growth factors like PDGF, TGF-β, VEGF and EGF. When reintroduced into the skin or scalp, these growth factors kick-start collagen production, increase cell turnover and accelerate tissue repair.

How Does PRP Work?

Platelets are best known for their role in blood clotting, but they also carry alpha granules filled with growth factors critical to wound healing. When PRP is injected into the skin or applied topically after microneedling, those growth factors activate fibroblasts (cells that produce collagen and elastin) and stimulate blood flow to the treated area.

This triggers three phases of tissue remodeling:

  1. First, an inflammatory response draws healing cells to the treated area.
  2. Next, new collagen fibers begin forming during the proliferation phase.
  3. Finally, during the remodeling phase, those fibers mature and strengthen over the following three to six months.

In hair restoration, the same growth factors revitalize weakened follicles by extending the anagen (active growth) phase of the hair cycle. The entire process relies on your body’s own biology, which is why PRP carries minimal risk of allergic reaction or rejection.

What Can PRP Treat?

Fine Lines & Wrinkles

PRP stimulates new collagen in areas prone to creasing and wrinkling, including crow’s feet, forehead lines and nasolabial folds.

Under-Eye Hollows & Dark Circles

The delicate periorbital area responds well to PRP, which helps thicken thin skin and reduce the shadowed, tired look under the eyes.

Hair Loss

PRP injected into the scalp delivers concentrated growth factors directly to weakened hair follicles, stimulating new growth and slowing further thinning.

Hyperpigmentation

Research indicates PRP may help regulate melanin production, making it a useful tool for addressing dark spots and uneven tone.

Uneven Skin Texture

Enlarged pores, rough patches and uneven texture improve as fresh collagen fills in surface irregularities.

Acne Scarring

PRP promotes tissue regeneration within depressed acne scars, gradually raising them closer to the surrounding skin.

What Are the Benefits of PRP?

Uses Your Body’s Own Biology

Because PRP comes from your own blood, there is no risk of allergic reaction or biocompatibility issues. No synthetic fillers, no foreign substances. It is one of the most natural options available for skin and hair renewal.

Clinically Supported Results

A prospective controlled clinical study published in the Annals of Dermatology found that a single PRP treatment increased collagen density by approximately 89% compared to pretreatment levels. Patients consistently report high satisfaction rates from this treatment.

Pairs Well With Other Treatments

PRP makes an excellent complement to procedures already offered at Choosi Skin Face & Laser Spa. Applied after RF microneedling, PRP seeps into the microchannels created by the needles, delivering growth factors deeper into the dermis for enhanced collagen stimulation. Combined with laser skin resurfacing, PRP helps speed healing and improve post-treatment results.

Safe for All Skin Types and Tones

Because PRP is autologous (sourced from your own body), it is safe across the full spectrum of skin types and tones. There is no risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation from the PRP itself, making it an especially appealing option for patients with darker skin tones who may be more susceptible to pigmentation changes from other treatments.

Minimal Downtime

Most patients return to their normal routine within 24 to 48 hours. Some redness and mild swelling at injection or treatment sites is common but typically resolves quickly.

PRP vs. Dermal Fillers: What’s the Difference?

PRP and dermal fillers are sometimes confused because they can address similar concerns, but they work in fundamentally different ways. Fillers add volume immediately by physically occupying space beneath the skin with substances like hyaluronic acid. PRP, on the other hand, stimulates your skin to produce its own collagen and elastin over time.

Fillers deliver instant results that last six to 18 months depending on the product. PRP results develop gradually over weeks and months as new collagen matures, with improvements lasting up to a year or longer with maintenance treatments. Dr. Tiffany Hall often recommends combining fillers with PRP for patients who want immediate volume correction along with long-term skin quality improvement.

What to Expect From Your PRP Treatment

Before Your Session

During your consultation, Dr. Hall will evaluate your skin or scalp, discuss your goals and determine whether PRP is best used as a standalone treatment or paired with another procedure. You will be asked to avoid blood-thinning medications and supplements like aspirin, ibuprofen and fish oil for several days before your appointment.

During Your Session

A small blood draw (typically about 10 to 20 mL) is taken from your arm. The sample goes into a centrifuge for about 10 to 15 minutes. While the blood is processing, we will cleanse your skin and then apply a topical numbing cream. Depending on your treatment plan, PRP is either injected directly into targeted areas using a fine needle or applied topically following a microneedling session. For hair restoration, PRP is injected across the areas of thinning on the scalp. The entire PRP process generally takes 45 minutes to one hour.

After Your Treatment

Mild skin redness and swelling are normal and typically subside within one to two days. You should avoid direct sun exposure and strenuous exercise for 24 to 48 hours. Makeup can usually be applied the following day for facial treatments. For scalp treatments, avoid washing your hair for at least 24 hours post-treatment.

Results begin emerging within two to four weeks, with continued improvement over three to six months as collagen remodeling or hair regrowth progresses.

Frequently Asked Questions

How Many PRP Treatments Will I Need?

Most patients see meaningful improvement after a series of three PRP treatments spaced four to six weeks apart. This applies to skin rejuvenation, under-eye dark circles and hair restoration alike. Dr. Hall will recommend a schedule based on your specific concerns and how you respond after the first session. Maintenance treatments once or twice a year help sustain your results.

When Will I See Results From PRP?

PRP works on your body’s timeline, not an instant one. For skin concerns, early improvements in texture and tone may appear within two to three weeks, with the most noticeable changes developing between two and three months post-treatment. For hair restoration, reduced shedding is often the first sign of progress, with visible new growth typically appearing within three to six months.

Is PRP Painful?

We use a topical numbing agent before treatment, so most patients describe the experience as mild and very tolerable. The blood draw feels like any standard lab draw, and the injections cause only brief, minimal discomfort.

Who Is a Good Candidate for PRP?

PRP is appropriate for most healthy adults looking to improve skin texture, tone and firmness, reduce under-eye dark circles or address thinning hair. It is especially well-suited for patients who prefer a natural approach without synthetic products. For hair restoration, PRP works best for those with early to moderate thinning rather than complete hair loss. PRP may not be recommended for individuals with blood disorders, active skin infections or certain autoimmune conditions. A consultation with Dr. Hall or one of our aesthetic specialists will determine whether PRP is right for you.

Can PRP Be Combined With Other Treatments at Choosi Skin?

Absolutely. PRP pairs particularly well with RF microneedling and laser skin resurfacing for enhanced collagen stimulation and faster healing. It also works well with Hydrafacial for deep hydration and alongside the Choosi Skin signature Correct & Polish™ and Lift & Restore™ treatments for comprehensive results.

Is PRP Safe for Darker Skin Tones?

Yes. Because PRP is derived from your own blood, it does not carry the same risk of hyperpigmentation that laser-based or chemical treatments can pose for melanin-rich skin. This is one of the reasons Dr. Hall recommends PRP as part of treatment plans for patients across all skin types and tones.
