Clear Away Dark Spots, Redness and Sun Damage With Dual-Wavelength Laser Technology

Age spots that showed up out of nowhere. Redness that won’t fade. These skin concerns are common, but they don’t have to be permanent. At Choosi Skin Face & Laser Spa in Cincinnati, OH, Dr. Tiffany Hall and her team use the Candela GentleMax Pro Plus, a dual-wavelength laser system, to treat pigmented lesions and uneven skin tone across all skin types and tones.

What Is Laser Skin Rejuvenation With the GentleMax Pro Plus®?

The GentleMax Pro Plus is a dual-platform laser that pairs a 755 nm Alexandrite laser with a 1064 nm Nd:YAG laser. It’s FDA-cleared for treating benign pigmented lesions and diffuse redness. The GentleMax Pro Plus works beneath the surface to target specific chromophores (melanin in dark spots and hemoglobin in visible blood vessels) without damaging surrounding tissue.

How Does the GentleMax Pro Plus® Work?

Each wavelength serves a different purpose. The 755 nm Alexandrite laser has a high affinity for melanin, making it effective at breaking down excess pigment in sun spots, age spots and freckles. The 1064 nm Nd:YAG laser penetrates deeper into the skin to target hemoglobin in blood vessels, treating conditions like rosacea and facial redness.

During treatment, the laser delivers concentrated pulses of light energy that are absorbed by these specific targets. That energy converts to heat, which destroys the unwanted pigment or collapses the targeted blood vessel. Meanwhile, Candela’s patented Dynamic Cooling Device (DCD™) sprays a burst of cryogen onto the skin just before each pulse of the laser to protect the epidermis and keep you comfortable.

What Can Laser Skin Rejuvenation Treat?

Sun & Age Spots

Fades dark patches, sun-induced discoloration, freckles and “liver spots” to restore a more youthful, uniform skin tone.

Redness & Rosacea

Calms persistent facial flushing and diffuse redness by soothing the underlying vascular network.

What Are the Benefits of GentleMax Pro Plus® Treatments?

Safe for All Skin Types

Because the GentleMax Pro Plus offers two wavelengths, our aesthetic specialists can select the appropriate laser and settings based on your Fitzpatrick skin type. The 755 nm wavelength works well on lighter skin tones (Types I to III), while the 1064 nm Nd:YAG is better suited for darker skin tones (Types IV to VI).

Built-In Comfort Technology

The Dynamic Cooling Device (DCD™) sprays a fine mist of cryogen onto the skin a fraction of a second before each laser pulse. According to Candela Medical, the manufacturer of the GentleMax Pro Plus, this system provides cooling protection that is more than 50% greater than contact or air cooling methods, making treatment far more tolerable than with older laser systems.

Minimal Downtime

Most GentleMax Pro Plus patients return to their daily routines immediately after treatment. Temporary redness or mild warmth at the treatment site typically fades within a few hours.

Fast Treatment Sessions

The GentleMax Pro Plus delivers up to 38% more power than its predecessor and features larger spot sizes (up to 26 mm), which means faster coverage of treatment areas. Sessions can range from a few minutes for a small area to about 30 minutes for larger zones.

GentleMax Pro Plus® vs. Ablative Laser Skin Resurfacing

Ablative resurfacing lasers remove the outermost layers of skin to promote new cell growth and address textural concerns like acne scars and uneven texture. The GentleMax Pro Plus does not remove skin. Instead, it targets specific concerns like pigment irregularities and blood vessels beneath the skin’s surface. If your primary concern is discoloration or redness, the GentleMax Pro Plus is likely the better fit. If texture is your bigger issue, laser resurfacing may be more appropriate. In some cases, Dr. Hall may recommend combining approaches for a more comprehensive result.

What to Expect During Your GentleMax Pro Plus® Session

Before Your Treatment

Your session begins with a consultation where Dr. Hall or a member of her team evaluates your skin type, discusses your concerns and determines the appropriate wavelength and laser settings. You’ll be asked about sun exposure, medications and your skin care routine.

During Your Session

Protective eyewear is provided for you to wear throughout the treatment. The GentleMax Pro Plus handpiece is placed against your skin, and the laser delivers rapid pulses of light energy to the treatment area. The DCD™ cooling system activates automatically before each pulse. Most people describe the sensation as a light snap or quick pinch, similar to a rubber band against the skin. Depending on the size of the area being treated, your session may take anywhere from five to 30 minutes.

After Your Treatment

You may notice mild redness or warmth in the treated area, similar to a light sunburn. This typically resolves within a few hours. Dr. Hall’s team will provide you with aftercare instructions, which typically include sun protection and avoidance of harsh cleansers on the treated skin for a few days.

Dark spots may initially appear slightly darker before they begin to flake off and fade over the following one to two weeks.

Frequently Asked Questions

How Many GentleMax Pro Plus Treatments Will I Need?

The number of laser sessions depends on your condition being treated and its severity. Pigmented lesions may clear after one to three treatments, while rosacea typically requires three to five sessions spaced four to six weeks apart.

When Will I See Results After Laser Skin Rejuvenation?

For pigmented lesions, initial clearing usually becomes visible within one to two weeks as darkened spots flake off naturally.

How Long Do Results Last?

Results are long lasting, especially for pigmented lesions that have been fully treated. New sun spots can develop over time with continued sun exposure or aging, so consistent sun protection is vital for maintaining your results.

Is Treatment Painful?

Most patients tolerate the GentleMax Pro Plus well, thanks to the built-in DCD™ cooling system. The sensation is typically described as a quick snap or mild pinch. For patients with lower pain tolerance, a topical numbing cream can be applied before the session.

Who Is a Good Candidate?

Adults with sun damage, age spots, rosacea, freckles or other benign pigmented lesions are generally good candidates. The dual-wavelength system is designed to treat Fitzpatrick skin types I through VI.

Patients who are pregnant, nursing or who have active skin infections in the target area should wait to schedule. Those with a history of melasma should discuss treatment options carefully with Dr. Hall, as certain laser wavelengths can worsen this condition.

Can GentleMax Pro Plus® Be Combined With Other Treatments?

Yes. Many patients benefit from pairing laser skin rejuvenation with other treatments at Choosi Skin, such as a Hydrafacial for deeper cleansing, a VI Peel® for additional pigment correction or RF microneedling for skin tightening. Dr. Hall can help determine the right combination and timing for your needs.
